- Nadal started the year with a 21-match win streak in which he won the Melbourne Open, Australian Open and Mexican Open title. His run came to an end after he lost the final at Indian Wells Masters against Taylor Fritz.
- He began the clay court season at Madrid Open where he reached the quarterfinal. He then faced second round defeat at Italian Open.
- At the French Open, he defeated the then World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal and went on to win the title by beating Casper Ruud in straight sets in the final.
- Rafael Nadal, who was looking to win his third consecutive Grand Slam title this year reached the semifinals at Wimbledon. He was about to face Nick Kyrgios but withdrew from the tournament on the eve of the contest after suffering an abdominal injury.
- He took a month to recover and made his return at the Cincinnati Masters where he made first round exit. He then entered the US Open and his hopes of winning his 23rd Grand Slam title was dashed by Frances Taiafoe, who beat him in the fourth round.
- He then took a sabbatical for the birth of his child and returned to action in singles at the Paris Masters, where he yet again bowed out after losing his first match in the tournament.
- He enters the ATP Finals as the top seed after the withdrawal of World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz and looks to win his maiden ATP Tour finals title.
- Taylor Fritz started the year by reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets.
- He made the Tennis world take notice of him when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the final of the Indian Wells Masters.
- He then started the clay court season where he reached the quarterfinal at US Clay Court Championships, Monte Carlo Masters. However at the French Open, he faced second round exit by losing to qualifier Zapatta Miralles.
- He started the grass court season with two first round exits at Libema Open and Queen’s Club championships.
- He came back strongly by winning the title at Eastbourne International. He went on to reach the quarterfinal at Wimbledon, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller.
- At the US Open, he suffered a shock first round defeat as he lost to compatriot Brandon Holt in four sets.
- After being part of the victorious campaign for Team World at the Laver Cup, he reached Tokyo for the Japan Open, where he won the title.
- He was able to qualify for the ATP Final after the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz due to an injury. He enters the tournament after second round defeat at the Paris Masters.
Nadal vs Fritz Head-to-Head: This will be the third time this year both the players will be facing each other on the ATP Tour. Fritz defeated the Spaniard at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year, while he also gave a tough fight in the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon. Fritz once again looks to give a tough fight against the 36-year old.
