Southampton’s record at home has been horrible, to say the least. They have only managed to get 10 points from their 14 home matches. Now that they face Manchester City in one of their best forms, it could be hard for them to come out victorious from this fixture. However, they did manage to win 2-0 against Man City back in January in the EFL Cup. Hence, Man City should not be taking them lightly.
Ahead of the game, coach Ruben Selles said during the pre-match press conference, “I think we prepared a solid and robust game plan. I think the boys know what to do exactly and then with our way to approach things, and our style, we are going to try to put a big performance there and try to win the game, that’s for sure.”
He was asked if the availability of Haaland gives Man City an edge. He replied, “I don’t think, per se, one player can change the dynamic of one team. I think one player can change it if the other 10 are doing their job properly. So, the fact that Manchester City now has Haaland in front just makes their system a little bit better because of the creation of the chances… We respect every player, but we have our own way to do things.”
On the other hand, Manchester City have been in incredible form as they now have a 7-match winning streak. They recently defeat Liverpool by a 4-1 margin. They have also played one less game than the table-topper Arsenal and Arsenal will next face Liverpool. If Liverpool manage to hold the Gunners back, then Manchester City have a way of getting a pressuring hold of Arsenal’s title hopes. However, for that, they will have to win all of their next matches including this weekend’s away fixture against Southampton.
About facing Southampton coach Pep Guardiola said during the pre-match press conference, “Southampton have always been so tough there [at their home ground]. The game we made it to 100 points, they were much better than us, we’ve drawn before. It’s tough and I have a feeling tomorrow won’t be an exception.”
On the possibility of still winning the league title, he said, “If we drop points, Arsenal will be champions in advance. If we win, win, win, we might be champions at the end of the season. We are used to it, it’s not a problem.”

- Southampton’s list of absentees owing to long-term injuries still includes Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento. During the international break, Mohammed Salisu and Che Adams picked up injuries which will continue to keep them out against Man City.
- Armel Bella-Kotchap sustained an injury in Southampton’s match against Tottenham Hotspur which saw him out of their last Premier League game. He still remains a doubt for this top-flight fixture as well.
- Coach Selles will probably start Duje Caleta-Car, Kyle Walker-Peters, Romain Perraud, and Jan Bednarek at the backline. While, either Carlos Alvarez or Romeo Lavia will join the club’s top goalscorer James Ward-Prowse in the front.
- The coach could start Theo Walcott for the third consecutive time in the attack. Sekou Mara might find competition for his place in the starting XI from Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana.
